A bit of history:

Iera Odos, The Sacred Way

The city of Egaleo is built over part of the ancient road that connected Athens with Eleusis.  The “Sacred Way” (Iera Odos in Greek) was the route along which the procession celebrating the Eleusinian Mysteries would move. The rites performed in Eleusis to honor Demeter and her daughter Persephone date back 3000- 3500 years and gradually became of significant importance not just for the Athenians but for people all over ancient Greece. The rituals and the beliefs were kept a secret among the devotes which is why many details remain unknown to date. It is believed that the meaning of the mysteries was coming in terms with the idea of death and looking forward to the afterlife.

Recent excavations for the construction of the metro station in Egaleo brought to sight parts of the ancient Sacred Way as well as ancient tombs and other archaeological findings some of which are in display inside the station.
